24 February 2018: A very interesting document, "Samuel Ashe and the Birth of a Free State", has been provided to me by its author, John W. Smith, Superior Court Judge, Wilmington, N.C., who has written extensively about the early judges of the lower Cape Fear region. It’s well worth reading to gain a deeper insight into Governor Samuel Ashe and those interesting times.
21 December 2017: Following an inquiry, I have just completed a review of two fascinating individuals, Amy Isabella Crocker, who married Richard Porter Ashe, and her daughter, Gladys Ashe. They each had an impressive number of romantic partners, and it has taken an interesting few weeks to track them all down.
7 March 2017: Apologies for the year-long silence in "News", but the year has been spent in updating many parts of the family tree! And now for the real news. Lindsey and Sean Hale have contacted me with photos of a portrait of my aunt, Mary Edith Annie Blackler Ashe, painted in 1928 by Helen Brookfield King. It's fascinating to see the similarities between the photo of Mary on the family tree and the portrait by Helen. I am indebted to Lindsey and Sean Hale for their kindness in sending me the photos of the protrait.
2 January 2016: Apart from James Ross' book, Children of the Ashes, there is not much information available on PVO/CORD, which details some of the events of the 1970s and early 1980s in Vietnam and Thailand. I have made an attempt to remedy this with an abbreviated History of PVO. Any suggestions with additional information would be most welcome, especially from those who worked for PVO/CORD during those years.
19 November 2015: With grateful thanks for their contributions to Susie Warren and Olivia Ashmore, I have now prepared a Research Paper on "The Ashes of Narraghmore, County Kildare". I have not yet been able to fit them into the main Ashe Tree, so any comments and help on this would be welcome.
4 October 2015: With apologies for the long silence on Latest News, I have now done a major update to the Family Tree. The delay has been due to my 5 year old computer dying, installation of new software, and incorporating multiple updates from ongoing research and contributions from cousins and other contributors (many thanks for all your inputs!).
29 March 2015: The Rev. Alexander MacLachlan, who married my grandmother's sister, published in 1938, for private distribution, "A Potpourri of Sidelights and Shadows from Turkey". I inherited a copy from my father, and he must have got it from his father. The original is bound in wooden covers with hinges, and is beginning to fade, but I have managed to scan it and make it available for others to enjoy -- it's a fascinating account of his time in Turkey and well worth reading.
28 October 2014: With thanks to my wonderful cousin, Peter Johnston for his contribution of Family Memories, I have now made a "People" page for his mother, Monica Johnston (née Allner).
19 October 2014: Many congratulations to Peter Ashe and Palna Patel on their marriage in London. It was a wonderful occasion, which was celebrated by both families.
20 May 2014: With thanks to David Ashe (Puerto Rico) for the suggestion, I have now made a "People" page for Commander Edward David Ashe, who was the first Director of the Quebec Observatory in Canada, and the great great grandfather of David.
17 May 2014: Although laid low with Dengue Fever, I have, with the help of Frank Bunting, been able to research the Ash branch of the family that emigrated from Londonderry to Philadelphia in 1750. The line starts with Capt. Henry Ash, and I hope this will be useful to our American cousins.
19 January 2014: Although I am still on the trail of the ancestors of Theophilus Fielding Ashe, in order to link him into the main Ashe Family Tree, I have been able to update the webpage on him with a little more information.
9 November 2013: Through the kindness of Dr David Morris, Head of Archaeology at the McGregor Museum in Kimberley, and courtesy of the Kimberley Africana Library, I have been able to update the research paper on Dr. Evelyn Oliver Ashe. This paper now provides a faitly comprehensive view of his life, but I'm still missing the link to the main tree, so would love to hear from anyone who has more information.
9 November 2013: With grateful thanks to John, who took the photos, we can now make available a Pedigree, issued by Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms, in 1846 to the Rev. Isaac Ashe, in Ireland. This is a historical document and well worth perusing.
